There is a unique kind of exhaustion that comes from carrying too much for too long.

It’s the kind that quietly becomes your normal. You answer emails before your feet hit the floor, take calls while making dinner, solve problems on vacation, and convince yourself that’s simply what it means to own a business. Until one day, you realize it doesn’t have to be.

I recently took two weeks away. And if you’re a fellow business owner, you already know that “away” is a relative term. I still answered questions, checked messages, and stayed connected when needed. The business didn’t stop, and neither did I.

But something was different this time.

For the first time in a long time, I wasn’t carrying the entire load by myself.

A few weeks before my trip, we welcomed a new Recruiting & Client Support Coordinator to the Purciarele Group team. While I remained involved, many of the day-to-day responsibilities that typically followed me into the evenings, weekends, and vacations were being handled by someone I trusted.

That changed everything.

Instead of constantly wondering what I had forgotten or what might be waiting when I returned, I could actually be present. I wasn’t disconnected from my business—I was simply no longer tethered to every single task.

There is a tremendous difference between owning a business that depends on you for everything and leading a business that has the people and systems in place to keep moving forward.

Those are two very different things.

A good portion of my time away was spent traveling with my granddaughter, and if you’ve ever traveled with a child, you know they have an incredible way of changing your perspective.

Adults travel with itineraries.

Children travel with curiosity.

They notice the things we overlook. They stop to watch a bird, laugh over something completely unexpected, or become fascinated by something most adults would walk right past. They’re not worried about the next meeting, the unread emails, or tomorrow’s to-do list.

They’re simply enjoying the moment.

Somewhere along the way, many of us lose that ability.

We become so focused on what’s next that we stop appreciating what’s right in front of us.

Those two weeks reminded me how important it is to slow down—not because the work isn’t important, but because life outside of work is important too.

Ironically, stepping back also made me better at what I do.

When your mind finally has room to breathe, you begin thinking differently. Problems that felt overwhelming become manageable. New ideas surface. Priorities become clearer. You stop reacting and start leading again.

That’s the real value of taking a break.

Not escaping your responsibilities.

Returning to them with renewed perspective.

As I reflected on the trip, I realized this is the same advice I give my clients every day.

If your business cannot function unless you’re answering every email, taking every phone call, approving every decision, and solving every problem yourself, you’ve created a bottleneck—even if you didn’t intend to.

Many business owners wear that as a badge of honor.

“I have to do it.”

“I’m the only one who can.”

“It takes longer to explain it than to do it myself.”

I’ve heard every one of those statements.

I’ve probably said a few of them myself.

The reality is that none of them create a sustainable business.

Strong businesses are built by hiring the right people, creating clear expectations, documenting processes, empowering employees to make decisions, and trusting your team to do what you’ve hired them to do.

Delegation isn’t about giving away responsibility.

It’s about creating capacity.

Capacity to think strategically instead of constantly putting out fires.

Capacity to focus on growth instead of simply surviving another week.

Capacity to spend time with the people who matter most without feeling guilty for stepping away.

As HR professionals, we often talk about recruitment, onboarding, performance management, and organizational structure. Those topics matter because they aren’t just HR functions—they’re business functions.

The right hire doesn’t simply fill an opening.

The right hire gives a business owner room to breathe.

That was my biggest takeaway from these past two weeks.

I came home with incredible memories, a suitcase that somehow returned heavier than when we left, and a grateful heart for the time spent with family.

But I also came home with something else.

Perspective.

A reminder that success isn’t measured by how indispensable we become. In fact, the opposite is often true.

Real success is building a business with the people, systems, and trust that allow it to continue serving clients exceptionally well—even when the owner steps away for a little while.

That doesn’t happen overnight.

It happens one process, one hire, one conversation, and one intentional decision at a time.

As I settle back into the routine, I’m grateful—not just for the memories made over the past two weeks, but for what they reminded me.

Work matters.

Serving our clients matters.

Building great workplaces matters.

But so do family dinners, unexpected laughter, watching the world through the eyes of a child, and creating a business that allows you to be present for those moments without everything falling apart.

So here’s my encouragement to every business owner reading this:

Take the vacation.

Build the team.

Create the systems.

Trust the people you’ve hired.

Not because you want to work less, but because you want to lead better.

Sometimes the strongest thing you can do for your business is step away long enough to remember why you built it in the first place.

Is your business built to run without you?

If stepping away for a few days feels impossible, it may not be a time-management problem. It may be a people, process, or organizational challenge.

At Purciarele Group, we help businesses build the teams, systems, and HR foundation that allow leaders to step away with confidence—knowing their business will continue moving forward.

Because great businesses shouldn’t depend on one person carrying everything.

Ready to build a stronger foundation? Let’s talk.
